How relevant are Impact Factor
 and indexation in Medline?

Maqbool H. Jafary,1 Shaukat Ali Jawaid2

Impact Factor (IF) as a measure of reputability of a journal seems to have assumed much power as it now plays an important role in hiring, tenure decisions and awarding of grants. However, there are increasing indications of it now being misused. It is alleged that IF is threatening to skew the course of scientific research. Critics also point out that editors manipulate the IF through different deceptive practices. In view of increasing controversial status of IF now other measures like PageRank algorithm, H-index, The F1000 factor etc., are under active consideration to measure the impact of journals. Similarly as a result of non-indexing of journals in Medline their visibility is limited. All this can be overcome if the journals go online which not only increases visibility but is also a great source of manuscripts and regional cooperation. With more and more full text journals migrating on the net, indexing in Medline is going to become less significant.

KEY WORDS: Impact Factor, Medline, Online journals.
