In Vitro antifungal activity of
deterium microcarpum

Doughari JH1, Nuya SP2

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the antifungal activity of root extracts of Deterium microcarpum against some pathogenic fungi.

Methodology: Soxhlet extraction of the active principles of the plant was carried out using petroleum ether, methanol and 70% methanol in water and tested for antifungal activity against some pathogenic fungi namely; Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium digitatum, Fusarium moxysporum, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans at varying concentrations of 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 µg/ml using the filter paper disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) was also determined at extract concentration range of 65-1000 µg/ml at room temperature and 37 ºC for C. albicans.

Results: The extracts were active against all the fungi tested at all concentrations of the extract used with Candida albicans showing the least susceptibility. The MIC and MFC values for the extracts ranged between 50-1000 µg/ml.

Conclusion: Antifungal substances can be sourced from Deterium microcarpum for possible development of antifungal drugs for the treatment of fungal infections such as candidiasis, cryptococcosis and skin infections.

KEY WORDS: Deterim microcarpum, Antifungal activity, Minimum inhibitory concentration, Minimum fungicidal concentration.
