Abstract

Objective: To compare blood lipid levels of athletes doing different of sports exercises for more than five years and sedentary college students.
Methodology: Fifty-four male athletes with a mean age of 20.59±1.80 years and 54 sedentary healthy male college students with a mean age of 20.24±1.08 years joined the study voluntarily. Measures were done after informing the subjects about measurements. The blood samples were taken in the next day morning between at 8:00 to 9:00 am in the laboratory. Blood was taken from antecubital forearm of the subjects according to the hygiene rules and was put into gel yellow cap tubes containing 5ml and blood lipid levels were analyzed using auto-analyzer, its trade mark is Spectrophotometry, in Central Laboratory of Erciyes University.
Results: When the blood lipid levels were compared between athletes and sedentary groups the triglyceride, cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels were found higher in sedentary subjects, whereas HDL cholesterol was higher in athletes (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Reduced cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels in athletes and increased HDL cholesterol levels of subjects can be because of exercise they do. The obtained findings in the study support this notion.
