Importance of self audit by a journal to measure
quality improvement and planning for future
Shaukat Ali Jawaid*During the Year 2006 we received a total of two hundred sixty eight (268) manuscripts from 29 countries including Pakistan for publication as against 114 in 2003, 140 in 2004 and 209 in 2005. The number of manuscripts received from overseas has also been steadily increasing ever since we started online edition of the journal (www.pjms.com.pk). Number of manuscripts from overseas during 2006 was one hundred seventy eight (178) as against 37 in 2003, 62 in 2004 and 133 in 2005. Manuscripts received from Iran in particular increased to 90 in 2006 as against 13 in 2003, 21 in 2004 and 74 in 2005. All this seems quite encouraging which shows confidence of authors and research scientists not only within Pakistan but overseas as well who selected Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences for their publications. However, we still face some problems like financial viability, long waiting time for peer review and publication, simultaneous submission and duplicate publication by some authors. There is a need to educate the authors in publication ethics in general and authorship criteria in particular. Reviewer’s data base is being increased and efforts are also being made to get the journal included in Medline and covered by ISI besides PubMed Central once we overcome the problem of preparing XML files.
